A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ…
A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ, who was born and died in Israel around 2000 years ago. Christians read and follow the Bible’s teachings and principles. The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that salvation and access to God is only through trusting in Him.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life
(John 3:16)
Being a Christian is not, therefore, based on gender, race, age or privilege. We become a Christian when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.
If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved
(Romans 10:9)
Becoming a Christian is a life-changing decision. It’s not a tick-in-a-box thing. Its not about simply doing good works or going to church, though these things are amongst many that should be true of the follower of Jesus.
There is a problem . . .
God hates sin (what we do wrong), so sin must be dealt with before we are allowed access to Him. Simply doing our best to be good is not enough to satisfy Him, because doing good cannot set us free from sin.
But there is hope . . .
Jesus died on the cross to take God’s judgement for our sins. When we trust in Him, and in His death and resurrection (Jesus did not remain dead), our sins are no longer counted against us and we are freed to serve the God who loves us so much that He sacrificed His own Son to save us.
As we learn more about God’s ways from the Bible, and about our Saviour, Jesus Christ, our lives are transformed from being occupied with our own wants and needs to becoming willing to serve God by loving others and enjoying fellowship with other Christians.
God’s Holy Spirit comes to the Christian and stays with them through the remainder of their life, helping them to appreciate more the love of God and Jesus’s sacrifice, and to guide them in God’s ways.
You have a choice . . .
Contrary to what some say, life does not abruptly end when we die. Our souls live forever. The question is…where?
Some mistakenly believe that we all go to heaven because a loving God wouldn’t allow us to go to hell, regardless of what we’ve done in our lives. This is simply not what the Bible teaches.
Try thinking of it this way . . . imagine standing at a fork in a road. Where we end up at the end of life’s journey depends on the choice of road that we take. God loves us and wants us to be with Him, but He hates sin and so this has to be dealt with before we can enter heaven. Deciding to accept Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, and committing your life to following Him, sets you on the right road to enjoying God’s presence for ever. Jesus said . . .
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”
(John 14:6)
